November 2002 Demo Videos
Below is a 10 minute video clip demonstrating the capabilities of our
spoken language intelligent tutoring system. The student has just finished running through a simulation of various crises in the Damage Control domain. The tutor is now going to engage in a reflective dialogue about the student's performance.
For a transcript of the following dialogue please click here.
The video clip illustrates some features of our spoken language
intelligent tutoring system:
- reflective tutoring: the tutor and student interactively
reflect on and discuss the student's performance in their session with
the simulator
- Socratic tutoring: the tutor asks questions rather than
giving explanations
- student initiative: the student is able to ask
"why"-questions after tutor explanations and alter the tutorial
plan by requesting that the tutor skip discussion of certain topics
- multimodal input and output: the tutoring system
coordinates linguistic input and output (speech) with
non-linguistic input and output (the user can indicate a
compartment with a mouse click or the system can highlight a
compartment)
- discourse markers: the tutorial dialogue system uses
discourse markers like "okay" and "well"
to help navigate the dialogue (Bangerter and Clark 2003); e.g., "okay" signals a
shift to another topic
- hinting: the tutor has a repertoire of hinting tactics to deploy in
response to student answers to questions
- generalization: the tutor identifies and discusses repeated mistakes
